All, Current learning theory leads us away from the cognitive mindset of verbatim fact and information regurgitation. To a greater or lesser extent educators are applying more constructivist principles by way of problem based learning using online tools such as Webquests and forward thinking faculty are introducing internet research classes to the standard curriculum. In his writings on Connectivism, Siemens asserts that knowledge creation is a question of knowing how to leverage a knowledge network by connecting individual knowledge chunks to create a larger body knowledge. In other words, it’s not what you know but whether you know how to find what you don’t know (2004). What I’m wondering is how far can we go down this route and whether it is possible to go too far. If schools relinquish the textbook approach in favour of the construction of knowledge, will our youth be missing out? Are hard learnt facts useful for anything other than pub quizzes?
