Last week I attended a workshop on Promethean Boards. I was amazed to watch how it can help teachers make their classes more interesting it’s a great tool for teachers to prepare digital lessons easily and wonderful tool to keep the students focused. Hi Asray
Very interesting wiki read, amazing the technology that is being used in classrooms. Having read the article and not having any experience with either smart boards or tablets, the idea of the tablet appeals to me more than the smart board. Simply because as some of the writers have stated your back is not turned to the class with a tablet and you are able to move around the classroom interacting with students which helps to keep them focused and on task.

Last week I attended a workshop on Promethean Boards. ... Has anyone used Promethian Boards? Hi Asra. We have smart boards here at ADMC which I use quite a lot. They have recently got some Promethean boards in as well, though I've not had a chance to use these yet. What is the difference between the two? Also, on a more general question, how effective do you think smartboards/ Promethean boards are as a teaching tool in relation to their price tag.

Hi Dean,
Tablets could be used as cheaper alternative to an interactive whiteboards. But cannot be used as a group input device in the same way as an interactive whiteboards.

Hi Philip, Promethian boards are similar to smart boards just a different company but are more interactive when compared to the smart boards. You can play your cassettes and CD’s without a computer since it has an audio player attached to it. Promethian boards come with software called ActivStudio using which you can create interactive presentations. It includes varieties of tools such as rulers, protractors, flipchart functions, animations & a lot more. Hi Asray, We had 2 promethean boards (still have them) when we first bought IWBs a few years ago. The people do give excellent presentations which get you all fired up about their use. However, we found them difficult to use ourselves. The software that comes with them is, I believe, very powerful, just hard to navigate your way around. When we kitted the whole school out we went for RM (Research Machines) boards instead. Apart from the advantage that you could write on them with regular whiteboard markers and not damage them, the software (Interwrite) that they come with proved more user-friendly and intuitive. Hi Regina, Yes I agree with you the software ActivStudio that comes with it is very powerful. To start with you might find it difficult but once you get familiar you will definetly enjoy the wonderful features offered by the Promethian boards. If you google for Promethian boards you will find loads of stuff readily available that could be used or you could also take ideas from these for your contexts.

Hi all, Here at Madinat Zayed College we have in every classroom: SmartBoard, projector and a nice set of speakers connected to the teacher machine. All our students have tablet-pcs. Personally I prefer to use tablet-pc over white boards. we also use a nice class management software, Net Support School, where students can present their work to the class using the projector from their ablets. Yes all the time..I am making good use of the technology in classroom. otherwise there is no way to keep them engaged and concentrating on tasks. Laptops in the hands of first diploma foundation students, is not an easy for teachers to manage the class. chatting has been a big problems for some teachers at our college.

Hi Ghasan, I feel the answer to all your questions will be a Promethian Board. I am in a similar situation as you are & we can see that the motivation level of students is very less here. Please read this interesting article from Marc Prensky (2001) Digital Natives Digital Immigrants. You could create wonderful Grammar exercises using Flash & create interactivity on the Promethian boards. Promethian Boards come with it’s own powerful software Activ Studio that helps you to create lessons. To start with you might it difficult to use but I feel it’s worth it As Gardner says in his theory of multiple intelligences people with strong visual-spatial intelligence are typically very good at visualizing and mentally manipulating objects. They have a strong visual memory and are often artistically inclined. Hi all I have had experience using these interactive whiteboards (IWBs) when I worked at the British Council (BC) Hong Kong (from 1998) where it was one of the first BC teaching centres (TC) to use this relatively new technology. Since then, as far as I am aware, all BC TC worldwide have started using or are planning to use these Promethean IWBs and that’s a lot of TC as they operate in over 100 countries (http://www.britishcouncil.org/home-contact-worldwide.htm)! When it was first introduced, there was a lot of trepidation (as with any new technology, especially for teachers who were not that IT-literate) but there was plenty of training for staff to learn this new technology and add it to their box of teaching tools. Now they have regular training sessions for new (induction) and experienced teachers (share and tell) as well as professionally certified courses such as the Promethean Accreditation Level courses. It was commendable of the British Council Hong Kong to go all the way and install ALL their classrooms with these IWBs so it turned into a kind of 'sink or swim' situation. Of course, there was a safety net of portable whiteboards in case of breakdown or lack of inexperience, etc.! Although I’m a bit of a ‘tech freak’, staff’s general consensus was that these IWBs were adding extra pressure/stress and load to their already burgeoning workloads. Not only was the training taking up a lot of time but more time was needed to prepare flipcharts, etc. As with any new technology, once familiarity kicks in it becomes second nature.
